Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 is legislation, initiated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India to provide more effective provisions for the maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens. It makes it a legal obligation for children and heirs to provide maintenance to senior citizens and parents, by monthly allowance. It also provides a simple, speedy, and inexpensive mechanism for the protection of the life and property of older persons. After being passed by the Parliament of India, it received President‘s assent on December 29, 2007.
